When we arrived there were people already waiting for the doors to open. Once they did the place filled to capacity in just a couple of minutes. Things were slow and a little unorganized which I attribute to the place and it's staff being new and also being hit all at once like this.
The simple meal I ordered was good. I was told they will begin serving alcohol in 2 weeks. Hopefully they can hang on long enough to get their routine down, bugs worked out, whatever. It would be nice to see a restaurant like this make it. I was sure hoping that new door in front was going to lead to a patio dining area though.
I got a beef borrito and enchilada meal with rice and beans. The service was good. However, I think they need to work on the food quality. The enchilada did not have a real enchilada sauce. And you could barely even taste the sauce they used. Inside, there was plenty of finely ground meat - but it too was tasteless like it had been boiled to death. The beans were absolutely tasteless, the rice did have some flavor although I couldn't tell what.
There was also no cheddar cheese which my wire asked to be added to her bean burrito. They said OK. It come back with no cheese on it at all. They said they didn't have any Cheddar - they had pizza cheese (Mozzarella) and American White Queso. She sent it back and was not required to pay for it. This Could be a very good resteraunt if they work on Flavor in their food. Also. We were told the menu hadn't returned from the printer. We would have settled for a bad copy in such a pinch. The only meals we seen were priced at $8.00 plus the drink. The newspaper said "lunch prices will range from $5 to $6." "Daily specials for both lunch and dinner will be available". Everything was $7.99 plus $1 for a drink. There were 4 Adults and 4 teenagers. We were all there to check it out their lunch. The place was full. The cost was way over what we expected to spend for lunch hour. The City workers got a break on their meals and the rest of the customers... We were there for lunch. There were 4 Adults and 4 teenagers. We got dinner prices. There was no specials as mentioned in the newspaper last Friday. It was a Grand Opening! It should have had something "special" for the rest of us. We are connoisseurs of Good Mexican Food for over 40 years in Wichita. We expect nothing less than Good Mexican Food in Haysville. No shortcuts on flavor especilly. I felt that the dinner I had was not up to the price of over $9 including the drink. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would give them a 6. My wife said a lot less. We will give them one more chance in a few weeks. Hope I can do better next time on the scale of 1 to 10.
I ate here on the Grand Opening Saturday. There were several other people in the resaurant also. The food they brought us was the worst food I have ever put in my mouth. I took a bite and it didn't taste right. I took a second bite and spit it out. We sent back all the food we got except for the kids chicken nugget meal that my daughter ate. The prices were not what was advertised in the local paper. I had high hopes for this restaurant but I will NEVER eat there again. I will drive to Derby or Wichita to get my Mexican food. I would rate this restaurant a 0-.
We tried the Casa Vieja on it's first real Friday night.
The air conditioner was broken and it was quite warm. Lucky it had been cloudy all day. There were people waiting to try it out though. I have to agree the food lacked flavor and I could not tell any difference between the burrito and enchilada other than size. There were no beans in the burrito. The waitress we had was pleasant and competent but noticed some of the others were struggling. THe food came in a reasonable amount of time. At checkout, there were problems with the credit card machine and I saw the owner give a lady 13 ones for change. He was appologizing all over the place for the heat. As with many previous resteraunts in HAysville, it would appear it was rushed and underfunded. Hopefully they will be able to work out the glitches and take some constructive criticism. The food wasn't inedible and wasn't too expensive but Haysville patrons are unforgiving and if things don't improve, out goes another resteraunt.
I liked the food--it is homestyle Mexican, not Tex-Mex like many Americans associate with Mexican food.
My husband ate there during the opening week and said the service was slow, but when we went back, the timing had picked up quite a bit. This is to be expected for new restaurants as they get the pace down. The food was good both times, not covered in heavy sauces so the actual taste of the food came through without over spicing. The refried beans were good. The rice was a little plain, but I am sure that will change over time as customers give feedback. The pricing was in line with other Mexican food establishments in Wichita. My husband got the deluxe burrito and it was more than he could eat. I got a burrito meal w/ beans and rice and was pleased with the meal. I wil be going back to sample more from their menu, but I think overall the quality is great as is the food.
Thanks for making the point that this restaurant is NOT a Tex-Mex place. They advert ise authentic Mexican cuisine and deliver!
Our family of four went on the second or third Friday they were open and had neutral or negative comments discussed among us.
#1 Very, very warm eating environment, made for unpleasant dining experience, couldn't wait to get outside to cool down. #2 Food was bland and tasteless. I agree with the other comments made about this, which leads me into next... #3 The prices are too high for the quality of food being served. We spent $40 for the four of us, which for good food isn't bad, but for tasteless food, sweating heat, bad service (which is #4) #4 Our waitress really needs to find another line of work. She spoke so soft you couldn't hear her at all and then when my husband asked if something was beef and/or chicken options, she mumbled something and then walked away without realizing that she hadn't answered his question. We decided that night that we probably wouldn't even give it a second chance. Our money is too important these days, if we're going to pay that kind of money we'll go someplace that we know we will get good food and good service.
My family of (4) visited the restaurant June 16th. As you have already heard it was very hot, the food was not good (the rice was very hard) and they had breaker problems which caused us to get charged twice as they had to flip the breaker off and back on to get the machine to work! We did not know until we checked our account online a couple of days later and the charge showed an Automotive company in Whitewater, Kansas but my receipt showed the restaurant with the Haysville address. My husband went back to let them know they had problems as I'm sure were not the only ones that this happened to so we thought we'd give them heads up and they were not friendly at all about the situation. We will not being going back as the prices were the same as Carlos O' Kelly's and it's worth the little drive to get good food for the same price!!
i would like to provide a little bit of comfort for those patrons that do like both the food and service at this establishment. the service did leave room to be desired, but i was quite impressed with the food. i have only had the chance to dine one time, but both my husband and his mother love the food (they are both avid carlos fans) in due time i do think vieja does stand a chance because ,as with all restaurants, it takes some time to get settled and established. also, with this being a new business to the area it will be difficult to build a name and to be able to maintain it. good luck and god speed casa....
It's a good thing that this restaurant got a permit to sell alcohol because maybe the customers can drink enough to make the food edible. I laugh at the people who say that their food is authentic Mexican food. I am a mexican woman and I wouldn't eat that food ever again. It did not have enough spice to it to be called "Mexican" food. The food you get out of those Taco trucks down on Broadway is way better than any food you could get at this restaurant. Too bad that the food isn't good because Haysville could have used another restaurant.
I went there the weekend before my birthday and I thoroughly enjoyed the meal. It was overloaded with fresh vegetables and meat and to top it off, great service. I really liked the taco salad they had.. IT ROCKED!!!!! I was totally surprised at the HUGENESS (if that is such a word) that it was. It was in the shape of a taco, but it was a Giant one at that. I will definately go there again!
We eat here nearly once a week. My husband loves authentic mexican food. I am used to tex-mex but now that I know that it is authentic I have learned what to order. I have never been inside the place because we always bring it home. I never have even paid the tab so I cannot comment on prices either. But the taste is authentic and the cheese dip is great! I am glad that Haysville has more choices for food and I hope that they stay. Try them with an open mind!
My husband and I have ate here on 3 different occasions now. Each time we have had excellent service and the food has gotten better each time. We will continue to come back, bring friends and tell others about this great little restaurant in Haysville!
we used 2 go all the time there but when jose left that place its been not as good the attention we used 2 have i think they dont have any general manager anymore and all the waiter need 2 learn more inglish
Ate here again this past week. Much better than when they first opened. I had carne asada tacos and rice which was all very good. My wife had chicken fajitas which she also said was good. The staff was attentive. The place is comfortable and nicely decorated. They now serve beer and have a patio. My only complaint is at times I had a hard time understanding the staff.
DELICIOUS! HOT! FRESH!! wonderful!!!!! GOOG ALL AROUND I LOVE THIS PLACE YUM!!!!!!!!!
This restaurant is lovely. The food is so good and so fresh. The staff are always smiling and polite. The salsa is awesome. This is my favorite mexican restaurant and I highly recommend it.
